A part of the late Lord Montagu’s private apartment in Palace House has been opened to visitors for the first time with the launch of a new exhibition. The Lady and the Rebel is a tribute to the present Lord Montagu’s grandmother Pearl Pleydell-Bouverie and his aunt Elizabeth Montagu and their stories are told through their own words and possessions.

The newly opened wing includes the library which the late Lord Montagu used as his sitting room and office. A great devotee of opera, this is where he would play his records or watch the early evening television news whilst enjoying a cup of tea. Visitors will enter the library through its false bookcase door.

Another section of the newly opened corridor, together, with a former bedroom, has become a gallery space for art from the Art Russe Foundation. About 25 paintings and sculptures will be on display until a permanent gallery opens in the grounds next year.
