Award for Shipwright School

The shipwright’s workshop at Buckler’s Hard was the winner in the Green Buildings category

at the Campaign to Protect Rural England (Hampshire) Countryside awards ceremony held at Itchen Abbas on 25 September.

The award, presented by the Lord-Lieutenant of Hampshire, Nigel Atkinson, was collected by Resident Agent Rachel Pearson and Buckler’s Hard Manager, Jane Mills. They were accompanied by Henry Russell, a timber frame specialist, who masterminded the construction of the workshop.

The project was praised for using only traditional tools and methods to train students, volunteers and apprentices. The building will serve as a training facility for future generations in traditional ship building techniques and related disciplines such as forestry management.
